Premature mortality in people with epilepsy.
نویسنده
چکیده
People with epilepsy are at increased risk of premature death, with a mortality rate that is 2–3 times higher than the general population (Cockerell et al, 1994). Premature death in people with epilepsy is associated with disease-linked factors (such as status epilepticus), sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) or underlying disease (for example, brain tumour) (National Sentinel Clinical Audit of Epilepsy-Related Death, 2002). However, people with epilepsy also have an increased risk of death from external causes such as suicide (Bell et al, 2009) and accidents resulting from seizures (van den Broek et al, 2004). National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (2012) guidance on the epilepsies recommends that children, young people or adults with epilepsy, and their family and/or carers, should be provided with tailored information on the person’s relative risk of SUDEP.

The long-term risk of premature mortality in people with epilepsy.
People with epilepsy have an increased risk of premature death. The risk is highest soon after onset of seizures. We report the findings of a long-term follow-up population-based study of people with epilepsy with regards to premature mortality. The National General Practice Study of Epilepsy is a prospective study flagged at the National Health Service Information Centre in the UK. Over 1000 p...
متن کاملPremature mortality in people with epilepsy in rural China: a prospective study.
BACKGROUND In China, few studies have described annual mortality associated with epilepsy in a general population and these have provided a range of 3.0-7.9 deaths per 100,000 people. We calculated the case fatality rate (CFR), proportional mortality rate (PMR), and standardised mortality ratio (SMR) to assess mortality in people with epilepsy in rural China. METHODS The target population was...

OBJECTIVE We estimated premature mortality and identified causes of death and associated factors in people with active convulsive epilepsy (ACE) in rural Kenya. METHODS In this prospective population-based study, people with ACE were identified in a cross-sectional survey and followed up regularly for 3 years, during which information on deaths and associated factors was collected. We used a ...
متن کاملA Brief Overview of Epilepsy with Emphasis on Children
Epilepsy is a brain disorder in which a person has repeated seizures over time. A seizure is a sudden change in the electrical and chemical activity in the brain. A single seizure that does not happen again is NOT epilepsy. Most children with epilepsy live a normal life. Certain types of childhood epilepsy go away or improve with age, usually in the late teens or 20s. Nearly 80% of people with ...

OBJECTIVES We investigated long-term (to 25 years) seizure prognosis and survival in people with newly diagnosed epilepsy in the community. We explored whether prognosis is different in those with epilepsy (>2 unprovoked seizures) and those with a single seizure at presentation. METHODS This is a prospective observational cohort study of people with newly diagnosed seizures. We investigated s...
